چکیده

Our team has been exploring the possibilities of orientationbased sensors on mobile devices. We constructed a prototype system for delivering 3D acceleration and magnetic compass data to a Pocket PC and developed trial applications. One class of applications relied on the tilt sensors to provide a gesture interface to an application. A second class of applications used the magnetic sensors to create a style of portable augmented reality interaction called "Searchlight". Through our user studies, we learned that orientation-based user interfaces are fun and have the potential to improve the usability of mobile devices, but require a high degree of personalization.

Natural Interaction Framework for Navigation Systems on Mobile Devices

Mobile Augmented Reality (AR) applications based on navigation frameworks try to promote interaction beyond the desktop by employing wearable sensors, which collect user’s position, orientation or diverse types of activities. Most navigation frameworks track location and heading of the user in the global coordinate frame using Global Positioning System (GPS) data. On the other hand, in the wear...

Linking Physical and Virtual Worlds with Visual Markers and Handheld Devices

Linking the physical and the virtual world is a major research theme of ubiquitous and pervasive computing. This dissertation describes concepts and techniques for linking information and services to physical objects as well as for interacting with this information using mobile devices and embodied user interfaces. Such interfaces use gestures on the device body as a means of input. In the rece...

Changing Interfaces Using Natural Arm Posture - A New Interaction Paradigm for Pedestrian Navigation Systems on Mobile Devices

This paper presents a new interaction technique, which is based on arm posture recognition, for mobile computing devices to switch between different visualization modes seamlessly. We implemented a pedestrian navigation system on Pocket PC, which is connected to a GPS receiver and an inertial orientation tracker. In the global coordinate system, user’s position is tracked with GPS data, and in ...

PalmSpace: Continuous Around-Device Gestures vs. Multitouch for 3D Rotation Tasks on Mobile Devices

Rotating 3D objects is a difficult task on mobile devices, because the task requires 3 degrees of freedom and (multi-)touch input only allows for an indirect mapping. We propose a novel style of mobile interaction based on mid-air gestures in proximity of the device to increase the number of DOFs and alleviate the limitations of touch interaction with mobile devices. While one hand holds the de...

Sketch-based Route Planning with Mobile Devices in immersive Virtual Environments

We present a novel sketch-based route planning technique, that supports the collaborative work of a group of people navigating through a virtual environments using mobile devices. With our new approach, route planning tasks, like creating camera animation paths, can be generated very efficient, while working on large screens with complex data. Our interaction technique lets the user explore the...
